Living Room

What type of rug is suitable for the living room?

In the living room many different activities of the home take place and many different types of rugs will work, but if you are looking for a soft and cosy feeling by the sofa, a slightly thicker rug is best. If you want it to be extra soft, you should invest in a rug with a high pile.

What size should a living room rug be and how should it be placed?

Length: When you choose the size of rug to be placed under a sofa or group of sofas, it should be longer than the sofa. This is to give an airy impression and to frame the area of the sofa.

Width: The sofa should be placed completely or partially on the rug. If you have a large rug (or put several together), the whole sofa can stand on the rug, otherwise, a rule of thumb is that at least 1/3 of the sofa should stand on the rug. This is partly to keep the rug in place and partly to tie together the furniture in this part of the living room.

So, the width depends on how you place the sofa (fully or partially on the rug) and whether you have a corner sofa, chaise longue, armchairs or a whole sofa group on the same surface. If this is the case, then these should also be placed completely or partially on the rug without feeling cramped.

Tip: If you have a large sofa group, we would like to recommend the STOENSE rug where you can put several rugs together without the joint being visible.

Bedroom

What type of rug fits in the bedroom?

A cool bedroom gives better sleep, but also colder floors. That's why it's lovely to have a large soft rug to put your feet on when you get up. It creates that lovely hotel feeling in the bedroom. Another option is to have a smaller rug next to the bed, perhaps even a sheepskin rug. A rug in the bedroom also contributes to improving your sleeping environment, as it collects dust particles from the air and dampens the noise level.

Tip: If you have drawers under your bed, a rug with a short low pile or plain weave is best to make it easier to pull out the drawers.

What size should the rug under the bed be?

The size and placement of a bedroom rug depend on what kind of bed you have and how it stands in the room. If you have a double bed (or single bed in the middle of the room), the bed can be completely or partially on the rug, so that the floor at the foot and the sides of the bed are covered by the rug. The important thing is that there is something soft to put your feet on when you get up, so there should be approx. 50 cm of rug next to the bed.

Tip: If you want an extra-large rug, we recommend the STOENSE rug where you can put several pieces together without the joint being visible. The alternative is to have a smaller rug next to the bed, in which case we recommend the size 80x150 cm.

Everybody wants cosy feet when they step out of bed. High-pile rugs retain heat in wooden floors meaning less heat is lost in your most used "chill" rooms, your bedroom and living room.

Dining Room

What type of rug fits under the dining table?

As there is a high risk of crumbs and spills ending up under the table, it is good to choose a flat woven rug where the crumbs are not pushed down into the pile. It is also easier to pull the chairs in and out as they can otherwise get stuck in the fringe.

Tip: If you have small children, you can place a KOLON floor protector under the high chair that is easy to wipe off.

What size should the rug under the dining table be?

Width: What you have to think about is that the rug needs to be wider than the dining table and the chairs when the chairs are extended. So, calculate that you will need between 60-80 cm of rug on each long side of the table. If the rug is too narrow, you risk getting caught in the edge of the rug when moving the chairs in.

Length: The rug should be longer than the dining table. If the dining table is positioned so that you also have chairs on the short sides, then the rug needs to be long enough that the chairs can be pulled out and in without getting caught in the edge of the rug.

Hallway

What type of rug fits the hallway?

For the hallway, a doormat is essential. Positioned just inside the door, it helps protect your flooring by catching dirt and grit, meaning less frequent vacuuming. To complement the doormat, consider adding a runner rug further into the hallway. The combination creates a cohesive look while offering extra protection. Runner rugs are easy to lift, shake off, and vacuum, making them a practical and stylish addition to your entryway. Together, they keep your hallway clean and welcoming with minimal upkeep.

Jute rugs make for easy clean up

Avoiding hard-to-clean high-pile rugs below dining tables means you can easily clean up messy dinner-time spills and keep your rug looking nicer for longer. Using flatwoven rugs in your hallway too, means dirty shoe prints can be wiped away in an instant.

Children's Room

What type of rug is best for a child's room?

In a children's room, there should be both sleeping and playing. Children often play on the floor, so it is important to have a nice rug to sit on. A rug with a low pile is the best option to play on. It is important that they lay firmly on the floor to withstand even wilder games. All of our children's rugs have a rubberized back to keep them in place. A rug in a room where you sleep also contributes to a better sleeping environment, as it collects dust particles from the air and dampens the noise level. We know that children are extra sensitive, so you can take comfort in knowing our rugs are tested, approved and completely free of substances that can harm your child's skin or health.

Outdoor

What type of rug is best for use outdoors?

Even on a balcony and terrace, an outdoor rug can add a more personal and cosier feel. Especially if you have a hard and cold floor of stone or concrete. Remember to choose a rug that is made for outdoor use so that it can withstand rain, snow and sun. Since outdoor rugs are extra hardwearing, they are also well-suited for certain indoor spaces – like under the dining area where the risks of wear and spills place extra demands on the rug.
