Flat as a leaf, round as a ball

This is how Bent Gantzel-Boysen's feather-light pendant lamp could be described when it first arrived at IKEA in 1979. It could, of course, be packed in a flatpack, but it could also be mounted in a large, round lamp that emitted a soft, pleasant light. CIRKEL was also produced as a table lamp. The shade consisted of 24 polystyrene blades that were easily attached to each other.

Bent, who studied electromechanics and engineering, started working for the Danish lighting company Louis Poulsen in 1956. In the 1970s he became head of the design team and created, among other things, the critically acclaimed LamPetit, a lamp that is often mistakenly attributed to his then colleague Verner Panton.

In the late 1970s Bent founded his own company and designed lamps for IKEA from 1979 to 1987. The CIRKEL pendant lamp, which was designed in 1979, was his first creation and was reintroduced as HAVSFJÄDER in the NYILLVERKAD collection in 2023.
